Sometimes referred to as "Father Louis", Thomas Merton is perhaps the most notable American Trappist monk in history. A prolific writer, poet, social activist, and theologian, Merton wrote more than 50 books and numerous essays. Perhaps his best-known book is his autobiography entitled The Seven Storey Mountain, which is often considered to be a modern type of Confessions by Augustine. Indeed, it landed itself on National Review's list of the best non-fiction books in the 20th century.
Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone - we find it with another.- Thomas Merton
